(August 21, 2010) – The Team USA Scholarship enters its third decade of providing opportunities for talented young American race car drivers with today’s nominations for the “Class of 2010” who will vie for a pair of scholarships to contest the traditional end-of-season Formula Ford events in England in October and November.
In 2008, Team USA driver Josef Newgarden became the first American ever to win the prestigious Formula Ford Festival (Kent division) at Brands Hatch, while Conor Daly became the youngest winner of the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone. Last year Brett Smrz finished a sensational third at Brands Hatch, despite starting 27th, and Connor De Phillippi mirrored Daly’s success from the...

Jimmy Vasser was the first Team USA Scholarship winner, way back in 1990 - before this year's winners were born! Since then, the program has provided a springboard for the...

Three months ago, few people outside of the Skip Barber Racing School in North America would have recognized the names Connor De Phillippi or Brett Smrz. However, by the conclusion of their first ever overseas foray to England in late October the pair had earned instant acclaim due to their outstanding performances in the traditional Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch and the equally prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy Formula Ford race at Silverstone.
De Phillippi (pronounced DEE phi-LEE-pee) and Smrz (smurrs) were the latest in a long list of drivers to have been granted an opportunity to display their talents on the international stage by the Team USA Scholarship, which has been assisting talented young American drivers in the early...
No doubt about it, Jeremy Shaw's Team USA has seriously hit its stride in the past two years. Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly did a great job for Team USA in last year's UK Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy race while Connor De Phillippi and Brett Smrz followed up this year with some equally impressive performances. Smrz came through from the back of the field to finish fourth at last month's Brands Hatch FF Festival while De Phillippi won the Walter Hayes race at Silverstone two weeks later. De Phillippi beat Daly's record from last year to become the youngest man to win the Walter Hayes spectacular at 16 years, 10 months and six days old.
De Phillippi and Smrz were selected from a group of seven Team USA 2009 finalists. De...

The pressure to perform is what you make of it. Ask Brett Smrz. This weekend he’s following in the footsteps of Jimmy Vasser, Bryan Herta, Buddy Rice and A.J. Allmendinger while flying the flag of the Team USA Scholarship in the Formula Ford Festival at England’s Brands Hatch circuit.
If that’s not enough, consider that Smrz and teammate Connor DePhillippi are following hard on the heels of last year’s Team USA drivers – Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly. All Newgarden did was win the Formula Ford Festival. All Daly did was capture the similarly prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone a fortnight later.
